Got To Dance - Emily Crow

Yes, Paddy and everyone else, I have now finally seen Emily's audition! It actually starts at about 2.15 on that video. She's very bendy, isn't she? OK, now, I don't take into account auditionees ages - I treat them all the same. So, while I agree that Emily is fantastically talented and could grow into an awesome contemporary dancer, this for me was more a gymnastic performance than dance. And if you check out previous posts of mine, in particular the Strictly Come Dancing Semi, you'll see rhythmic gymnastics is really not for me. I thought the performance quite hard and lacking musicality and the lines were sometimes unfinished and untidy. And I still maintain the outfit and the make up is far too much. You did keep asking me to check it out, mainly, I think, in order for me to agree with you about how outstanding she is - but I have to be honest and say I've preferred others I've seen. Sorry.

  1. Hello Emily is a freestyle dancer which is not contemporary its about flexibility and control she is the current u12 World, British and European champion also the BATD U14 British Scholorship winner 10,s of thousands of kids compete in this field you should attend one of the big championships and maybe you might have a better understanding of this style. BATD is the British Association of Teachers of Dance and they have a very different opinion of Emily!!

  2. Thank you for explaining - I understand why her performance didn't appeal now - that's what the exhibition dancers do on Strictly! But that's taking nothing away from Emily, she is amazing - it's the actual style I'm not a fan of. I'm no expert in any field, I'm just a fan who blogs about the reality shows, so it's very much my personal feeling. It's nice to have an informed comment, thank you, I shall take the style into account the next time I see similar.

  4. I agree with Jaye but will be harsh and say I thought Emily's performance was tedious and did not interest me at all. Just because she is very flexible does not make her a good dancer and the music interpretation - no, none at all. Costume - bad, makeup - bad, the routine - very bad. Show some controlled moves and not just a quick flip into a position and then out of it again, show some passion interpreting the music and show a bit of soul like Matthew!

  5. I've not watched semi final 2 yet - but I did see Matthew's clip and WOW! He is special, even I can appreciate his lines and intensity. Will get round to watching the rest - Olivia, I'll try to find some links for you :-)

    Thanks for popping by!

  9. I also feel emily would make a great gymnast but lacked rhythm and feeling as a dancer, im very pleased they toned her make up down as she looked like she was made up for an american child pageant in her first couple of dances

  11. Hello we see Emily at competitions and it was fantastic to see Freestyle dancing represented in this competition as its massive in Britain but usually only by ticket only event. Emily is in Primary school and has to be congratulated in the way she conducted herself we watched her stand and clap every finalist she has been a fantastic ambassador for Freestyle. A genuine fantastic well mannered hard working child and a pleasure to watch.

  14. This show has just hit Australia and as an ex dancer myself I have to say that it was an absolute travesty that Emily made it through to the finals and Status were eliminated. There is absolutely not doubt in my mind that it was her 'cute kid' appeal and age that put her through; not that she was a better dancer than the Status dancers. What a huge disappointment. In fact, as the show has long since played out and I know who won, have to say the whole thing is pretty sickening. Supposed to be about UK's "best dancer"? Nonsense. Whilst there were some extraordinarily talented kids in the competition, it is clear the public voted on cuteness and kid appeal. They did not vote for the best dancers. Really really disappointing. These sorts of contests are just are waste of time when left to the public vote. They inevitably just play out as a popularity contest & never end up being about the actual most talented or "best" dancer/singer/etc.

  15. There's to be a second series, it'll be interesting to see what acts make it through next time and if more freestyle dancers come to the fore. Thanks for stopping by everyone :)

  16. Re: Anonymous We are Freestyle Dancers and Emily is one of the most talented freestyle dancers around freestyle is a ticket only sport as it involves young people. Emily has again picked up the World Championship Title again for 2010 and is now earned herself a place at Performing Arts School and will be sadly missed from our dancefloors!!! She quite rightly deserved her place in the final as we are dancers and all of our freestyle friends voted voted voted for her as we love her!!! Dance is diverse and there is many styles and like it or not freestle is very popular in Britain Ireland Norway South Africa .... Emily has performed at many events after Got to Dance and is a World Champion at her style Good Luck Emily in what you do and if you read this ignore the jelousy!!!!

  17. Thats probaly why she made it to the final everyone from the freestyle world voting for her she is nothing special. Her feet are awful seeing as she is supposed to do ballet. There are hundreds of kids far better than her. Best sticking to freestyle if thats how they dance x

  18. why the harsh words to this little girl we watched her on BBC s the Slammer thats why we googled her she is so beautiful and amazing this sounds like out and out jelousy to me shes 12 and my kids and the kids on that programme thought so too. Good Luck to Emily she is definately a joy to watch. PS something wrong with people who cant give credit to children !!

  19. I don't think it's jealousy - it's simply a difference of opinion in what constitutes dance - many commenters on here agree wth me that from a musicality point of view, freestyling isn't as pleasing on the eye as other variations of dance.

  22. I don't know I'm afraid - it might be worth contacting the Freestyle body mentioned above, they may have records from competitions etc :)

  23. I to was very impressed by Emilys dancing on The Slammer but I have to question her costume choice bearing in mind her age. The close ups of her doing the splits in virtually see through tights with obviously no underwear on were hardly suitable for kiks tv!

  24. Hi im emilys mum and to the anonymous commentator who obviously has no knowledge of freestyle dance Emilys suit IS FULLY LINED and is the equalivant of dance tights and a leotard! Emily has worked this year at many prestigious events and is performing next month with Beverly Knight in London, Thank you to everyone for your support for Emily she no longer competes and has just got a place at a very well known dance school.
